Fast Facts about First Congregational Church

- Our membership is 300+, including 50 middle and high school aged youth. Our congregation is friendly, growing, accepting, and open to new people.

We aim to be an all-inclusive church with reserved parking in the side lot, level entrance access at our side door, elevator access to all floors, wheelchair lifts at front and playground entrance as well as large print bulletins and audio devices to hear more clearly.  We have level entrance available into our bathrooms and kitchens as well.

- The church is located in Clayton, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb that borders St. Louis City and Forest Park. We are next door to Washington University and Fontbonne College and a short distance from Eden Theological Seminary.

- We are a congregation of the United Church of Christ. Our congregation was originally founded as an abolitionist church in 1852 led by Truman Marcellus Post. Congregational churches trace their roots back to the Pilgrims. In 1957 the merger of the Congregational-Christian and Evangelical & Reformed Churches formed the United Church of Christ. Known as the UCC, we strive for unity at the same time we celebrate diversity which is reflected in our motto taken from Jesus’ prayer, “That they all may be one.”

- As a declared “Open and Affirming” Congregation, we extend to all persons participation in the full life and ministry of the church regardless of age, race, gender, religious background, physical/mental abilities, or sexual orientation. We strive to be affirming of all people as children of God, and to provide a safe physical, emotional, and spiritual haven.

- The church founded and houses our state accredited and highly regarded First Congregational Preschool. Started as an outreach to provide quality early childhood education to our community, this preschool is open to members and non-members alike. Serving children ages 2 ½ to 4 years, the preschool serves about 85 families during the school year and 60 for summer camp.

- Our church is known for its excellent and inspiring music program ranging from gospel to classical. The sanctuary features an Austin 56 rank, four manual pipe organ. Members enjoy participating in our adult Chancel Choir, Choristers Children’s Choir, and Handbell Choir. A number of professional and amateur instrumentalists are also frequently featured in worship.

- The church building consists of a large sanctuary which seats 400, a smaller chapel, a fellowship hall, parlor and numerous meeting rooms and classrooms. The elevator proves access to the west parking lot and three floors of the building The fellowship hall features a stage with stage lights and sound system.
